Biography

Zena B. Maddox is a native of Baltimore, Maryland where she began her ballet training at the Baltimore School for the Arts under the direction of Norma Pera. She has trained under other prominent teachers such as Anton Wilson, Samantha Ordaz, Debra Robinson and Vadim Pijicov. Upon graduation from high school, Zena was accepted into Butler University’s Dance Department with a scholarship. While at Butler she has studied under the direction of the chair, Larry Attaway and teachers Derek Reid, Susan McGuire, Marek Cholewa, Rosanna Ruffo, Stephan Laurent, Cynthia Pratt, Michelle Jarvis, Michael Johnson, and Patrick Hinson. 

 

She has spent her summers at various intensives, such as Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlem, under the direction of Marcia Dale Weary and Virginia Johnson, respectfully.  During the Summer of 2014 Zena Traveled abroad to Eastern Europe where she had the opportunity to not only perform in multiple countries but also teach students at the national schools of ballet and company members of the Polish Dance Theatre. Zena has performed various lead roles in "The Nutcracker," as well as lead roles in "Cinderella" and "Pulcinella". Zena has had original roles choreographed on her by Marek Cholewa, Cynthia Pratt, Andrea Long, Donald Williams, Barry Houghson, and Jim Orsorno. In 2015, Zena has most recently perfomed in Gerald Arpino's "Viva Vivaldi"; and for her final performance as a member of Butler Ballet Zena performed the lead role of the Diamond Fairy in "Sleeping Beauty". In 2011, Zena began teaching through the Baltimore School for the Arts, Super Kids outreach Summer camp as a teacher's assistant for two years. For three of her four years at Butler Zena has taught dance through the Butler Community Arts School. During her senior year at Butler she also taught at Premier Dance Academy of the Performing Arts in Avon, Indiana where she taught ballet classes and choreographed for their spring recital. Zena has also worked with Motionwear as a fit model and one of their catalog models. Through working with Motionwear, Zena's work has been featured on popular dancewear websites such as Sadie Jane Dancewear and Discount Dance Supply. In 2014 Zena was chosen to be Motionwear's spotlight dancer of the year. Her interview was then featured on YouTube and in the July '14 issue of Dance Teacher Magazine; which can also be seen here! In May of 2015 Zena graduated from Butler University with a B.A. degree in Dance Pedagogy and honors in dance; as of June 2015 Zena has moved forward in her career and is dancing professionally with The DC Contemporary Dance Theatre.
